The door to paradise
– White stag of Saint Hubert - A couple of years ago this watercolour was an illustration in one of Germany’s best reputed outdoor magazines. The story, kind of a legend, was about an old hunter, who after his death met God in person of a white stag with a golden cross between his antlers. Though difficult it may be to paint a white animal without using white as a body paint, I moulded the white shape out of the contrast of violet and yellow. This painting precipitated a storm of indignation in the editor’s office. The painting seemed to be somewhat too modern, not suitable for a more conservative magazine.
The editor was spoiled for choice, either to use this painting or to have nothing. He decided to publish. And there it was. Nevertheless the painting was exhibited in a remarkable exhibition about “Saint Hubert in Art” in the “Deutschen Jagdmuseum” (Museum for Hunting in Art) in Munich.
