Evening at Ngorongoro – Evening in Africa –
the watercolour shows the last flushing of an evanescent evening light. Looking from Sopa-Lodge terrace over the Caldera to the western rim of the crater with the vast Serengeti plains behind, there is a sky dipped in burning Indian yellow and orange. Dark flocks of nightly clouds are drifting along the distant ridge, and like slag swimming on red glowing lava, it almost smothers the blaze of colours. The sun has already set and within minutes all blaze will be vanished from the sky. While the hard shadows of the beginning night have soaked up the light from the 600 m deep floor of the crater, the creatures of the wild are left cronies on the gloomy stage of Ngorongoro.
